HONEY
Honey is often used as a sweetener, but it is also known for its therapeutic properties because of its digestive, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiseptic characteristics. It’s in the Douro International Natural Park and in the uncultivated mountains of the same region that our bees do their miracle. This pure honey, cold extracted far from any pollution, has a varied composition of pollens from the region's flora: Wild Lavender, Almond, Chestnut and Oak, as well as a multitude of wildflowers that nature offers in our region. Casal dos Avós' honey is the result of our deep respect of biodiversity, and of our region's traditions and values.
OLIVE OIL
Our olive groves, composed of multi-centenary olive trees and, in some cases, some thousand-year-old specimens, are located on the banks of the Sabor river ("Flavor" river). This area, very difficult to access, only allows a manual harvest. The extra virgin olive oil Casal dos Avós, extracted from the best olives varieties from the Trás-os-Montes region (Verdeal Transmontana, Madural, Cobrançosa and Cordovil), is produced in the greatest respect of tradition. The olives are pressed within 24 hours after harvest, giving our olive oil its unique flavour.
ALMONDS
Our almond groves are located in the Trás-os-Montes region (meaning "behind the mountains") in the Douro International Park, on the banks of the Sabor and Douro rivers. Our crops are controlled, non-intensive and pesticide free to preserve biodiversity. As the trees density per hectare is very low, we are farming our almonds under optimal conditions, in this warm and dry climate that suits them so well.
